World Breastfeeding Week 2014

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action – WABA was founded in 1991. One year later, this organization created the World Breastfeeding Week, regarded as a vehicle for promoting breastfeeding. This event occurs in 120 countries and, officially, is celebrated August 1-7 with the aim of promoting the goals of “Declaration of Innocenti”:

• Establish a national coordinating committee of breastfeeding;
• Implement the “Ten steps to successful breastfeeding” in all maternity hospitals;
• Implementing the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes and all relevant resolutions  of the World Health Assembly;
• Adopt legislation to protect women who breastfeed at work.

This year´s World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) theme is a response to the current countdown to achieve the “Millennium Development Goals”, asserting the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in the post 2015 agenda, and engaging as many groups, and people of various ages as possible.
