The World No Tobacco Day (May 31) was created in 1987 by WHO member states in order to attract the world’s attention to the tobacco epidemic and diseases and preventable deaths, related to tobacco use .
Smoking is considered the leading cause of preventable death worldwide by the World Health Organization ( WHO). WHO estimates that one-third of the adult population, ie 1 billion and 200 million people (including 200 million women) are smokers . Research shows that approximately 47% of the male population and 12% of the female population in the world smoke. While in developing countries smokers constitute 48% of men and 7% of the female population, in developed countries women’s participation more than triples: 42% of men and 24% of women have smoking behavior.
The main purpose of World No Tobacco Day is to contribute to the protection of present and future generations from the consequences not only tobacco but also against the social, environmental and economic harm from use and exposure to tobacco.
