World No Tobacco Day – May 31 #NoTobacco

On May 31, it promotes the World No Tobacco Day, the date established in 1987 by the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to draw the attention of society on diseases and preventable deaths related to smoking.

Smoking is considered by WHO a leading cause of preventable death in the world. Recent data indicate that smoking is responsible for about 6 million deaths each year, including 600,000 people who are victims of passive smoking.

Smoking is the cause of about 50 different diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, angina) cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema and bronchitis).

In 2015 the theme of the campaign will address the illegal trade: World No Tobacco Day 2015: Stop illicit trade of tobacco products.

One in every 10 cigarettes, and many other tobacco products, consumed worldwide are illegal, making the illicit trade of tobacco products a major global concern from many perspectives, including health, legal, economic, governance and corruption. The tobacco industry and criminal groups are among those who profit from the illegal tobacco trade, leaving the public to pay the health and security costs. Ratification by governments of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products is necessary to respond to the financial, legal and health impacts of the illicit trade of tobacco products. The public, academia and other sectors can take action by urging their lawmakers to make their countries Parties to the Protocol. ( Source: WHO)
